“Kitten’s got claws! Okay, it’s a little confusing. Did you pass that massive yellow barn?” Lilly asked.

  “Yes, twice.”

“Okay, so go toward it and bear right. You should see a sign for Jayberry Farms—it’s a sign shaped like a sun and the words are—you know—they’re burnt into it.”

Jill rolled her eyes. “Of course.”

“I can hear you rolling your eyes, lady. I’ll be out front to see you in.”

With that, Lilly hung up and Jill drove toward the weirdest looking barn she’d ever seen.

  “You’re here!! I can’t believe it!”

Lilly came bouncing towards Jill’s Honda, spinning in the air at random intervals. She looked even more the part of the free-spirit than the last time Jill had seen her. Lilly’s hair, which was now a faded pink, hung in random braids with beads and feathers stuck in. She wore a short white sundress that was splattered with paint and showed off her map of colorful tattoos.

Lilly ran over to Jill and jumped in her arms. Since Lilly was a petite five feet and weighed about as much as a Chihuahua, Jill had no problem catching her friend with one arm.

“Oh my god, look at you! You look like such a sophisticated, worldly, New York lady! How’s fighting the good fight going?”

Jill embraced her friend. “Oh, you mean handling faulty cod piece lawsuits? It’s aces.”

“Hmm… I’ve seen the damage a faulty cod piece can do. It’s really no laughing matter.” Lilly shook her head. “So much squeezing. Anyway—are you ready to relax this weekend? For once?” Lilly grabbed Jill’s hand and led her down a wide dirt path that gave way to a thicket of woods.

“Uh—what about my car?” Jill tried to stay put but Lilly was surprisingly strong.

“Oh, you can just leave it there. Nothing will happen to it—nobody’s really into cars around here.”

  “Oh—uhm—all right.”

Jill took a last look at her car as Lilly dragged her toward the woods. “So… where is it you live exactly?”

“Hold on…” Lilly ducked away from some very low hanging branches as Jill easily side-stepped them. “Here!”

The path through the trees opened up into a huge expanse of verdant green farmland. On one side there was a fenced in square where five cows stood, chewing. Chickens ran around one corner of the square, in front of a red chicken coop. On the other side was a huge green expanse that just disappeared into the sparkling blue horizon. Jill squinted to see a huge, perfectly square white house in the distance.

“Isn’t it just beautiful?” Lilly asked, clapping her hands. “I mean, have you ever seen this much green?”

Jill smiled at her friend. “It’s gorgeous. I even like the fertilizer/weed smell.”

“Get used to that, girl. Actually…” As if by sleight of hand magic, Lilly produced a multi-colored, perfectly packed bowl from her dress. “Here, take a few hits and tell me you don’t feel 67% more relaxed.”

Thinking back to her law school days—which was the last time Jill had touched weed—she tried to remember the science behind smoking a bowl. Luckily for Jill, it was like riding a bike.

“Wow… oh wow, yes. That’s much better.” Jill exhaled into the fresh air and linked arms with Lilly.

“Oh, I can’t wait for you to meet everyone! Let’s see, there’s Jonah, Roscoe, Cooper, Sandy… hmm, let’s see who I’m forgetting…Jade—she’s new. They’re gonna love you!”

Jill found that hard to believe. She’d hung around Lilly’s artist friends before and it had always been a nightmarish combination of holier than thou pronouncements and humble odors.

Lilly led Jill up the crumbling stone steps and pushed open a chipped green door. The two stepped into a haze of purple smoke and the vague, subtle chords from a Phish album. Three men and two giggling women sat around a rectangular table, playing cards.

“I just don’t think you’re getting what I’m saying—it’s the totality of Lynch’s work that shows his genius—not just the one show.” One of the men marked each of his words by stabbing the air with his joint.

“Roscoe… nobody’s disagreeing with you.” One of the women, an olive-skinned beauty with long, dark hair and a nose ring shook her head. “We were just saying how much we liked Twin Peaks.” The woman caught Jill’s eye and smiled.

“Well hi! You must be Jill—Lilly said she had a friend coming in from New York today. You’re a lawyer, right?” The woman got up from the table and gave Jill a warm, tight hug. Jill could easily feel the woman was not wearing a bra under her calico top.

“I’m Jade. It’ll be so good not to be the newbie anymore!”

“Don’t get too used to this beautiful mug,” Lilly squeezed Jill’s face. “Little miss thing is heading back to the big city on Monday.”

“Oh, boo.” Jade pouted at Jill. “Well, we’re just going to have to show you a good time tonight.” Jade winked at Jill before sitting back down at the table. Jade picked up her cards and formed them into a fan over her face, but Jill could have sworn she was stealing glances from behind the mask of cards.

“You’re a lawyer?” One of the men, who was wearing a knit beanie over his thick dreadlocks, put his cards down and crossed his arms. “What do you know about intellectual property law?”

Jill cocked her head. “A little. I deal mostly with product liability cases.”

“I’m in the market for a lawyer to represent me against a hack in Burlington. He’s been stealing my ideas for years.”

The other woman at the table, a chubby blonde with bright pink glasses, shook her head at the man. “Nobody’s stealing your ideas, Coop. You both just make bamboo bookcases. They’re all hideous, get over it.”

The two women disappeared under the table amid gales of laughter. Cooper turned red and looked back down at his cards.

“Uhm, anyway I was wondering where we put the uh… magic?” Lilly placed exaggerated air quotes around magic, and Jill knew this was going to be one of those hazy, dreamlike nights that make living so exciting.

  “Here we are.”

Lilly led Jill into a room off the kitchen. She bent down and opened up a small cupboard. She pulled out a cookie jar shaped like Garfield and retrieved a small plastic baggy of what looked like old dried out celery.

“Feel like going on a little walk?” Lilly shook the baggy at Jill and smiled.

“Are those mushrooms?” Jill walked over and touched the bag.

Lilly nodded. “Guaranteed to set you straight. These reset your mind, girl. They make everything like… a beautiful fantasy.”

Jill looked at Lilly’s pleading, excited gaze.

  “Come on…” Lilly whispered.

Jill smiled and nodded. She was committed to letting go this weekend, and she couldn’t think of a better way to escape.

Lilly plucked a handful of mushrooms from the bag and pressed them into Jill’s palm. “Bon appétit, my lovely.”

Jill popped the entire handful into her mouth. She recalled from college that the quicker she ingested the mushrooms, the less she would taste them. Jill quickly chewed the incredibly earthy treat as Lilly handed her a mug full of orange juice.

“Vitamin C helps strengthen the high. You’re gonna be feeling awesome in about thirty minutes.” Lilly swallowed her own mushrooms and closed her eyes. “I cannot wait for sunset.”

“That’s where Sunflower, one of the cows, had her calf. It was a beautiful, gross experience, to be honest.”

Lilly led Jill around the huge green field, pointing out interesting happenings from her life on the commune. “And over there—that’s where I saw an owl and I swear, Jill, he was trying to tell me something.”

Jill nodded and giggled. She could tell Lilly’s mushrooms were starting to have their dreamy, otherworldly effect.

As they crept up the path, towards a hidden building Jill had not noticed before, the sun hit the grass in a way that made
Jill gasp. It was the most beautiful sight she’d ever seen—miniature, golden particles danced like fairies across the grass, using the sun’s rays as their spotlight. Lilly stopped in her tracks right behind Jill, as she too had fallen under the spell of the sun.

After standing and staring for what seemed like hours, but was most likely only minutes, a hawk screeched and Jill jerked her head towards the sky. If she thought that the grass was beautiful, she wasn’t prepared for what the sky had in store. Huge, puffy, blue-tinted storm clouds were moving in, making the sky look like a large, snowy kingdom.

“Nothing like a late July thunderstorm, is there?” Lilly asked dreamily. Jill could swear she could hear a rhythmic chanting as the wind blew, before realizing she was just hearing the trees move.

A low rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, and Jill laughed. “I guess… I guess we should head back to shelter. Is that right?”

Drops of rain started to fall, slowly at first, but picking up speed with every second. Jill looked down to realize that her white linen top was starting to become see-through.

“Yeah—let’s go see what everyone’s up to, huh?” Lilly grabbed Jill’s hand and the two ran all the way back to the main house. By the time they reached the crumbling stone steps, it was downpouring.

The green door opened and Jade stood in the threshold, smiling. “Look at you two. We’ve got to get you guys into some dry clothes.”

Jill would’ve been fine staying in her wet clothes. The wet fabric sticking to her skin felt amazing, like a comfortable scuba suit. Everything was feeling electric to Jill at that moment.

She smiled as Jade took her by the hand and led her down a hallway. Jill looked back over her shoulder at Lilly, who was giving her a thumbs up.

Jade opened the door to the third room down the hallway. The cracks in the door looked to Jill as if they were trying to tell a story she desperately wanted to know the end to. She decided to inspect the door later and followed Jade into her bedroom.

Smiling warmly, Jade sat Jill on her bed. “I think we are about the same size. Your boobs are definitely bigger than mine, though.”

Jill studied how Jade’s hair tumbled perfectly down her tan back as her hostess moved gracefully over to a small closet. It swayed with every step she took.

“How about this? You can get changed here.” Jade held up a short, green dress that was printed with hibiscus flowers. “It’s super comfortable.”

Jade lay the dress on the bed. As she bent over to smooth it out, Jill could see her perfectly round breasts almost spill out. Jill bit her lip as she felt her own moisture start to build between her thighs. She’d never been with a woman before, but she’d thought about it. There were times when she and Lilly were alone after a long night of drinking where she was sure Lilly was giving off signals that her friend had wanted to taste her, but she’d always laughed it off.

Jill wasn’t sure if it was the mushrooms, but she needed to know what Jade tasted like. She wanted to know what it felt like to have one of those perfect breasts in her mouth. Jill steadied her legs enough to stand. She slowly unbuttoned her linen blouse, revealing her milky breasts, which were being put on display by a lacy black push-up bra. Never taking her gaze off Jade, Jill lowered her soaking wet shorts and let them fall to the ground. Jade moved slowly toward Jill with a hungry look in her eyes that made Jill want to explode. When Jade was about an inch away from Jill’s face, she licked her plump, pink lips and moved slowly and expertly so she could whisper in Jill’s ear.

“I’ve been hungry for your pussy since I met you.”

Jill almost came right then and there. Jade’s throaty voice, and the feel of her soft hands on Jill’s ass was almost too much to take. She let out a tiny moan and Jade took her hand and led her over to the small twin bed. The storm was starting to pick up steam outside, and thunder clapped loudly above the house. Jade explored Jill’s mouth with her tongue, making Jill moan almost as loud as the thunder.

As they kissed, Jade’s hand wandered over to Jill’s breasts, stopping to lightly tug her small, perky nipples. Jill’s extra-sensitive nerves made her feel everything ten-fold. She had to stop herself from exploding as she felt Jade’s hand lightly linger on her pelvis before teasing around her panties.

“You’re so fucking wet,” Jade whispered in Jill’s ear. “I fucking love it.”

Jade’s hand found its way under Jill’s panties as the woman started kissing her neck. Jill moaned with pleasure as Jade played with her better than she’d ever played with herself. She knew exactly where to rub hard and to rub soft to work Jill up into a frenzy.

“Please,” Jill panted out. “Please eat my pussy—baby, I want you to taste me.”

Jill did not usually talk dirty. She was always embarrassed whenever someone asked her to do it, and she never quite got the hang of it. With Jade, though—the words just poured out.

Jade looked up at Jill and smiled. Her dark gaze told Jill to be patient. She worked her way down to the left breast and traced her tongue around Jill’s hard, sensitive nipple before slowly kissing down her stomach. Jade’s breasts brushed against her pelvis as the woman positioned herself between Jill’s toned, milky thighs.

“Oh baby…” Jill moaned as Jade started kissing the top of her lacy underwear. Her hands flew to her own breasts, which she massaged as Jade expertly pulled her panties down her thighs. With her teeth.

Jill moaned loudly—too loudly—as Jade plunged her tongue deep inside. She grinded her hips slightly. Jade closed her eyes and rotated her tongue clockwise inside Jill, moaning into her. Thanks to the mushrooms, Jill was at pleasure overload. Everything Jade did to her—every flick of her tongue and caress of her breast—it was as if fireworks were going off in her body with every touch.

Jade’s tongue was small and soft, but worked quickly around Jill, attempting to press every button she had as fast as possible. Jill shook with every flick of Jade’s tongue. Every quiver that came from Jill was punctuated by a quick, forceful moan.

With a final scream and thrust, Jill came—hard—into Jade’s mouth. Jade licked up everything Jill had to offer. She then smiled as she crawled back on top and kissed Jill deeply.

“You taste so good.” Jade buried her face in Jill’s neck.

Nobody had ever made Jill feel this good—not even Alfi. She felt as though this was her awakening… that moment where she would shed all the negativity of her life before this night. She was breaking free from her cocoon and finally living.

“I know that look… you spent the night with Jade, didn’t you?”

Lilly sipped her coffee as Jill took a seat at the island in the kitchen. “How can you tell?”

Lilly laughed. “Oh honey, I can sense the unclenching of your ass. You have that free-spirited, dewy look. That’s Jade’s power… one night with her and you feel 100% stress-free.” Lilly tilted her head up towards the ceiling. “She’s like a human hot oil massage.”

“Ah.” Jill poured herself some muddy coffee and sat down across from Lilly.

“I take it you’ve—erm—been massaged by Jade?”

Lilly closed her eyes and shook with pleasure. “Oh yeah. It was probably the best sex of my life, so I needed my best friend to experience it, didn’t I?” Lilly reached across the island and put a piece of Jill’s hair behind her ear. “Come on… you’re happy as a clam, admit it.”

Jill rolled her eyes and smiled. “I do feel a lot better. I just—I don’t know, it feels icky… like I used her… or she used me? I don’t know.”

Lilly put down her coffee and shook her head. “You’ve gotta let go of that uptight city attitude, Jill. Nobody gets used here. We’re all consenting adults, and we all enjoy each other’s company here—sometimes sexually.”

Jill looked at her friend. Lilly using a stern voice was as rare as Jill being with a woman.

“I’m being a judgmental bitch right now, aren’t I?” Jill smiled sheepishly.

  “Y
eah, just a smidge.” Lilly returned to her normal, bubbly self. “Just let go and enjoy the ride, man. You’ll be surprised at what kind of good karma will come your way if you just open yourself up to the universe.”

Jill nodded and went back to considering the black sludge that rested in her mug.

“Keeping that philosophy in mind…” Lilly jumped off the stool she was sitting on and rounded the island with her hand outstretched. “How would you like to help me milk Sunflower? It’ll round out your hippie weekend.”

Jill shrugged. “Sounds like a plan, man.”

Lilly laughed and grabbed Jill’s wrist. “Now you’re getting it.”

Jill’s second day on the commune slipped through her fingers in a flurry of dancing, singing, tending to livestock, and making candles. By the time the first star twinkled in the sky, Jill had decided the day was the best day of her whole life. She watched the sun set with her head in Lilly’s lap as they huddled around a crackling fire, her brain swimming with pleasant, cannabis-fueled thoughts.

“I want to stay at Jayberry Farms.” Jill looked up at Lilly. “I fucking love it here. I want to move to this weird little commune. Just… just leave all that law shit behind and start anew.”

Lilly smiled and petted her friend’s newly braided hair.

“Well, I would love it if you lived here. Believe me, you know how hard I’ve had to work to get you to just visit.”

Jill sat up, waiting for the “but.”

“That being said,” Lilly continued, “I also know how hard you’ve worked for everything you have in the city. I met you when you were a snot-nosed law student… remember? You wouldn’t shut up about how you would ‘shift the dynamic of the Supreme Court’ once you were appointed.”

Jill chuckled. “Jeez—I don’t even remember being that idealistic. I was probably just trying to impress you because you were all scary and alternative.”

“Hey! I’m still scary…” Lilly laughed. “Anyway, I just want to make sure you think a big old life decision like this through before going native. Aren’t you up for a big promotion at work? Like—career changing?”
